Abstract

Diabetes is a global epidemic, and its prevalence and thereby the financial burden are increasing at an unprecedented rate worldwide. A majority of the newly diagnosed diabetics in developing countries are unaware of the long-term complications of diabetes mellitus. One in two adults with diabetes is undiagnosed globally. After the diagnosis of diabetes mellitus, 10 to 15 years may pass before overt macrovascular complications take place. However, microvascular complications may already be present, even at the time of diagnosis, especially in type 2 diabetes patients. Therefore, it is crucial to be aware of the problems related to undiagnosed or inadequately treated long-term complications leading to high morbidity and mortality risk in these patients.
